The best Humminbird HELIX 9 is the one that matches how you search for fish. Choose MEGA Side Imaging when you want to scan structure and water to both sides of the boat. Choose MEGA Down Imaging when your priority is a clearer view directly beneath the hull. Move up to HELIX 12 when a larger display will make split-screen sonar, mapping and navigation easier to read from your normal driving or fishing position.
Start With The View You Need
Fish-finder names can feel like a wall of abbreviations, but the choice becomes simpler when you start with the water you want to see. Traditional CHIRP sonar helps identify depth, bottom shape and targets in the water column. Down Imaging adds a picture-like view below the boat. Side Imaging extends that search to the left and right, helping you cover more water without driving directly over every piece of structure.
Choose HELIX 9 MEGA SI If…
You search broad flats, weed edges, creek channels, timber, rocks or other structure and want to inspect both sides of the boat as you move.
Choose HELIX 9 MEGA DI If…
You spend more time vertical fishing, following depth changes or studying targets immediately below the transducer and do not need a side-looking view.

MEGA SI And MEGA DI In Plain English
Side Imaging is for searching. It can reveal structure, cover and changes away from the boat’s path. That wider perspective is useful when you are trying to find the most promising part of a point, identify an isolated object or understand how a break continues across the bottom.
Down Imaging is for inspecting below. Its narrower view helps separate branches, rocks and other structure under the boat. It works well alongside CHIRP sonar when you want a second way to interpret what is in the water column.
A HELIX 9 MEGA SI model also includes down-looking imaging, so Side Imaging is generally the broader tool set. The tradeoff is that it may cost more and asks the angler to learn an additional view. If you know you will not use side-looking sonar, a DI-focused model can be the more direct purchase.
What The 9-Inch Display Changes
Humminbird lists the HELIX 9 G4N with a 9-inch, 1024-by-600-pixel color display and keypad control. Nine inches is a practical middle ground: large enough for a useful map-and-sonar split while remaining manageable on many fishing-boat consoles.
Screen size should be judged from the seat, not from a spec sheet. Measure the mounting area, check steering-wheel and throttle clearance, and sit where you normally drive. A display that looks large on a desk can feel much smaller when it is several feet away in bright daylight.
When HELIX 12 Is Worth The Step Up
A larger screen does not create stronger sonar by itself. Its value is readability. HELIX 12 becomes more compelling when you keep three or four panes visible, use mapping heavily, run the display from a standing position or want smaller details to remain readable without leaning toward the console.
HELIX 9 remains the better fit when console space is limited, you usually run one or two views, or the unit will sit close to the operator. Put the extra budget toward the correct transducer, chart coverage, mounting hardware or networking accessories if those will improve the complete system more than screen size.
